Botox Q & A

What does Botox® do?

Botox is used to reduce the appearance of lines and wrinkles on the face. Botox works by paralyzing the muscles beneath the skin, smoothing the exterior appearance. The treatment is frequently used to treat the lines between the eyebrows, on the forehead, and crow's feet around the eyes. Botox can also be used to treat muscle spasms like eye twitches, profuse sweating, migraines, and incontinence. It works by paralyzing the sub-dermal muscles and blocking chemical stimulation.

Other less well-known areas that can be improved by Botox include:

  • On the jawline, to turn up the corners of the mouth
  • Saggy neck muscles called platysma bands
  • Around the mouth, to decrease signs of wrinkles
  • The chin, to improve the appearance of dimpled, or cobblestone, chin

How effective is Botox?

The effects of Botox will last between four to six months, yet vary with each patient depending on how long and how many injections have been given. The longevity of the effects also depends on the areas of the body being treated.

With facial Botox, as muscle activity slowly returns, lines and wrinkles will begin to reappear. In order to maintain a smooth and youthful appearance, follow up visits will be necessary. Over time, with regular Botox treatments, the muscles may be trained to relax and the patient’s wrinkles will have a less severe appearance. Botox is most effective on those that appear when the facial muscles move, or on dynamic wrinkles, such as frown lines or the lines that appear in a furrowed brow.

What does treatment with Botox entail?

It is important that anyone considering Botox see a doctor who is trained and licensed in administering the injections. In the proper hands of Dr. Mills and her expert team at Mills Obstetrics & Gynecology, injections can have wondrous effects on your appearance and physical well-being.

When you meet with Dr. Mills, she will evaluate your facial anatomy to pinpoint specific sites where injections will provide the most benefit.

If you’re experiencing an overactive bladder, you might constantly feel the urge to urinate. You may also be prone to leakage, wetting accidents, or going to frequently. Luckily, Dr. Mills can also treat urinary incontinence by injecting Botox into your bladder muscle.

A very thin needle is used, and the injections weaken and relax only the chosen muscles that cause facial wrinkles or urinary incontinence. Results will begin appearing in a few days, but the full effect of the injections may take up to a week to notice. The improvements begin to fade slowly after about three months, although the effects in some areas may last longer.

Before you undergo treatment, make sure to tell Mr. Mills of any medications or supplements you may be taking.
